Verify your domain's owner email

Why registries ask you to confirm the registrant's email, and what happens after 15 days.

ICANN's WHOIS accuracy rules require every registrar to confirm that the domain owner's email address works. A verification email is sent to the registrant contact when:

  • a domain is registered with an email address that has not been verified yet;
  • a domain is transferred in from another registrar;
  • the registrant is replaced by a contact whose email has not been verified;
  • the registrant's email address is changed to one that has not been verified.

The rule applies to generic extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .mobi, .name, .pro, .tel and .us.

What to do

  1. Open the email and click the verification link. Check your spam folder if it is not in your inbox.
  2. That's it — the domain carries on as normal.

If you don't verify within 15 days

The registry deactivates the domain. Your website and email stop working, and the domain shows a page explaining why. It comes back as soon as the email address is verified.

Tip

Didn't get the email, or it went to an address you can't read? Correct the registrant's email under Edit your domain's contact details — a new verification email goes to the new address. If you need it resent to the same address, open a ticket.
