Premium DNS

What Premium DNS is, and what it covers

An anycast, DDoS-protected DNS service for one domain — what it includes, and what happens if it lapses.

2 min read Updated

Every domain you hold with us already answers from our nameservers at no charge. Premium DNS is an upgrade for a single domain: its zone is published to an anycast network, so a lookup is answered by the server nearest to whoever is asking, and the zone is protected against DNS denial-of-service attacks.

The first thing any visitor's browser does is look your domain up. If that lookup is slow, everything after it is slow too — which is what the upgrade is for.

What is included

ZonesOne — the domain it was bought for
DDoS protectionYes
IPv6 supportYes
SPF, DKIM and DMARC recordsYes
Number of DNS recordsNo fixed limit

There is a monthly query allowance. It is generous enough for ordinary use, and sustained use well above it is charged — you would hear from us before anything changed.

What it does not do

  • One order, one domain. It cannot be moved to another domain, and a second domain needs its own order.
  • There is one plan. Nothing to upgrade or downgrade to.
  • It does not switch back off. Once the order is placed there is no endpoint to remove it, so the tile disappears rather than offering to undo it.

It works with every extension we sell.

Buying it

  1. Open Domains and choose the domain.
  2. Press Premium DNS under Manage.
  3. Confirm. This raises an invoice — nothing is ordered until it is paid.
  4. Pay the invoice. The order is placed within minutes of the payment landing; you do not need to come back and press anything.

Then point the domain at it — see Point a domain at Premium DNS.

Important

Premium DNS has to be renewed, and a lapse takes the domain down.

If it expires, the order is suspended and the domain stops resolving — the website and the email with it. The grace period matches your domain's own. After that the order is deleted, and every record in the zone goes with it.

Keep your own copy of the records, and keep the renewal paid. This is the only product we sell whose lapse stops a domain working.

Refunds

There is no money-back guarantee on a Premium DNS order on its own. If you bought it while registering the domain and the domain is deleted inside its own money-back window, that refund covers both.
