Aether WordPress theme

The Aether dashboard, section by section

Logo, colours, fonts, header, footer, layout and the advanced tools, all in Aether → Settings, and what each section changes on your site.

3 min read Updated

Everything about the look of your site sits in one screen: Aether → Settings, its own entry in the WordPress menu, under the Dashboard. The sidebar on the left holds eight sections; a section opens without reloading the page.

Click Save changes, or press Cmd/Ctrl + S. You stay where you are, a section with unsaved changes carries a dot, and a value that cannot be accepted is flagged on its field rather than lost.

General

  • Currency — the currency your visitors read prices in, with a switcher in the header when you sell in more than one.
  • Shortcuts — links to the screens you visit most.

Identity

  • Logo mark — a square symbol shown beside the site name, in the header, the footer and on the sign-in page.
  • Full logo — one picture with your name in it. It replaces both the mark and the name.
  • Site name and Tagline. The tagline is also what search engines show under your home page's name.
  • Site icon — the small square in browser tabs and on a phone's home screen.

The full logo and the site icon are WordPress's own: changing them here changes them in Appearance → Customize → Site Identity, and the other way round.

  • Header bar — light or dark, narrow or not, and the button at its right: Sign In (then My account once signed in), or your own call to action with its label and link.
  • Announcement bar — one line above the header on every page: a message, an optional link, three colours. Visitors can close it; it stays closed in their browser until you change the message.
  • Mega menu — the panels the header's tabs open. See Build the header menu and the mega menu.
  • Reassurance strip — the short points and the contact link along the foot of each menu panel.
  • Footer — the shade of the band, the line under your site name, and the payment marks.
  • Social profiles — one address per network; an empty field shows nothing.

Colours

  • Primary colour — the accent of buttons, links and highlights. Its shades (Hover, Soft tint, On dark) are worked out from it, or picked one by one.
  • Menu icons — the colour of the icons beside each service, and of the tile behind them.

Elementor's global colours follow these, so a widget set to the primary colour changes with it.

Typography

  • Fonts — a text font and a heading font, from Google Fonts, with a live preview.
  • Where the fonts come from — Google Fonts, or This site. With This site, the two fonts are copied once to your own server when you save, and pages never contact Google — which keeps your visitors' addresses away from Google (GDPR) and makes pages appear sooner.

Layout

  • Site width — Default, Wide or Extra wide. The header, the sections, the footer and Elementor's boxed containers all follow.
  • Spacing — the vertical rhythm: how much air sits between the sections of a page.
  • Page banner — the banner model (Premium or Classic), its shade, and whether the breadcrumb ("Home / About") is shown above the title.
  • Service pages — the band of strengths under the price grid: plain or in cards, full width or inside the page.

Advanced

  • Structured data — what the theme tells search engines. See Search engines, speed and accessibility.
  • System details — the versions of Aether, WordPress, PHP and the three plugins, and your site's language, ready to paste into a support request.
  • Export and import — every setting of this screen as a file, to keep a copy or give another site the same look. The site name, the tagline, your pages, menus and the Customizer are not part of it.
  • Restore the defaults — every setting back as the theme ships it. The site name and tagline are kept.

Tip

Before trying a new look, click Export the settings: importing that file puts everything back.
