Aether WordPress theme

Build the header menu and the mega menu

The header's tabs and the panels they open, built in Appearance → Menus: cards for a short list, columns, cards and a promotion for a full one.

The header menu is an ordinary WordPress menu, built in Appearance → Menus and set to the Primary location. Aether draws each top-level item as a tab, and the items under it as a panel that opens on hover, on click and from the keyboard.

Getting started creates a first menu: your service pages, Domains and About. Group the services under tabs of your own — Hosting, Servers, E-mail — by dragging them under a top-level item; the home page's catalogue follows the same groups.

Two layouts

Choose in Aether → Settings → Header → Mega menu → Column layout.

Cards (the default)

Two levels: a tab, and under it the services. Each service is drawn as an icon, its name and a sentence — the sentence is the service page's excerpt, edited on the page itself.

Columns

Three levels, for a fuller menu:

  1. Tab — a top-level item. Its own link is not used: it opens the panel.
  2. Column — each item under the tab. Its Mega menu box chooses the column's style:
    • Links — under a heading: a bold title over a list;
    • Links — under a small label: a spaced uppercase label over a list;
    • Featured cards: the items under it, drawn as cards with a picture;
    • Service rows: the items under it with their "from" price, as on the home page;
    • Promotion: the item itself, with its picture, its title as the link and its description as the sentence.

    Stack under the previous column (for link columns) puts a short list under the one before it.

  3. Link or card — each item under a column, with an icon (or Automatic, the service's own) and, for a card, a picture.

Tip

The sentence under a link, a card or a promotion is the menu item's Description. If you do not see that field, turn it on in Screen Options at the top of the Menus screen.

The reassurance points and the contact link along the foot of every panel are set in the same Header section, under Reassurance strip.

On a phone, and on a narrow screen

The header becomes a menu button with a drawer below 861 pixels, and on a wider screen too whenever your menu does not fit on one row — a long menu, or a menu in a language with longer words, never pushes the page sideways. In the drawer, each tab expands its list under it.

The footer's columns are four more menus, in the locations Footer — Products, Footer — Domains, Footer — Resources and Footer — Legal. An empty location shows nothing.
