What is a VPS?
A virtual private server is an isolated machine running on physical hardware, with resources set aside for it. With KVM virtualisation the server behaves as its own machine, with its own kernel, rather than sharing the host's — so what other customers do on the same hardware doesn't reach you.
What's the difference from shared hosting?
On shared hosting, one server runs many websites and the platform is managed for you, within limits. On a VPS or dedicated server you get root access: you install what you want, and you are responsible for keeping it running and patched.
Do I get root access?
Yes, on both VPS and dedicated servers. You can install any software allowed by the acceptable use policy.
Is cPanel included?
cPanel/WHM is available with server plans and is installed for you when it is part of the plan you bought. Check the plan's page for what it includes.
What is supported, and what is mine?
We look after the machine and the network around it: hardware, connectivity, boot problems, reinstallation, and the operating system as delivered. What you install on top — your web server, your applications, their configuration and their security — is yours. Ask us anyway if you're stuck; we'll say what we can see.
Can I add storage, or a dedicated IP?
Extra storage and dedicated IP addresses are available on most plans. Where the option isn't on the service page, open a ticket.
Can I move between plans later?
Changing plan usually means a new server and a migration rather than an in-place resize. Tell us where you're heading and we'll say what the move involves.
